Solar power is an important source of renewable low-carbon energy in Mexico - a country that benefits from a significant amount of sunshine annually. To reduce the reliance on local electricity, 1,355 solar panels have been installed on the parking lot at our manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosí in Mexico.
Generating 1,214,020 kWh per year
The solar panels can generate up to a massive 1,214,020 kWh per year, which is the equivalent of planting 300 hectares (over 740 acres) of forest every year, taking the burden off the local electricity supply and reducing the use of fossil fuels. An additional benefit for employees is being able to park their cars underneath the solar panels in the shade, keeping them cooler in the heat of the day.
The installation work, which concluded in 2021, was coordinated by the Facilities and Plant Services teams with the collaboration of different departments on site.
At a simple inauguration event, Marcelo Herrera, Plant Director, thanked all who had worked on the project, in particular the Integrated Global Services and Purchasing functions, who ensured that everything ran smoothly. The San Luis Potosí plant continues work to help protect the environment and improve the efficiency of the facilities for the benefit of employees.
Global trends
Global energy consumption continues to grow with the industry sector consuming approximately just over half of the world’s delivered energy. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, “If current policy and technology trends continue, global energy consumption and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions will increase through 2050 as a result of population and economic growth.”
